I've decided to try out Internet Explorer 7, as I've been having a few issues with general wonkiness in the latest version of Firefox. Also, who doesn't like to try out new things?
I'm a huge fan of the extensibility of Firefox, and I've found that I was missing a few things I'd become accustomed to, since switching back to IE. I'm still sorting some of this out, but I've found one means of getting some of the functionality back, via the Google Toolbar. I'm a fan of Google's Toolbar in general, as it packs in a nice assortment of features, and hasn't given me any trouble in any of it's various implementations. I noticed that it has functionality now for adding custom buttons, so I decided to start out with trying to implement one of the simpler things I've been missing.
There's an extension for Firefox called Gbutts, which adds a nice row of selectable buttons directly to the Firefox's toolbars that act as links to various Google subsites. I started off with that general idea of creating a simple link button for Google Reader and after finding the bookmark button itself to be relatively easy to implement, I went a step further and added notification of new items by having the button monitor a users "Reading List", the feed that Google generates that shows content from all subscribed feeds.
The icon offers a simple color change (green) to notify a user of new content. It'll check out browser launch, and every 15 minutes thereafter. The button, of course, also acts as a direct link to your Google Reader. This does require that you be logged into your Google Account to function.
If you are running Internet Explorer and have Google Toolbar ver. 4 or higher, click here to add the new button.
